A free event for Victorian aficionados - join us at the beach! - if you want to have a picnic on a beach and sport your newest bathing suit, simply come along, bring your own food and blanket!
After frolicking in style, we plan to have an evening walk, showing off the fashionable seaside, boating etc. costumes - photos will be taken, gossip will be exchanged, flirting likely to happen - maybe a game of croquet on the lawn too! all depending on the weather...
This is not an official, finely structured event - so just a relaxed social gathering, a chance to wear your seaside finery and relax.
Dress code - Strictly Late Victorian, please. No blatant steampunk, goth etc. - lovely as they are they are just not a part of this particular event. Obviously, I cannot dictate what people are wearing on a public beach, but we would like to celebrate the historical aspects of our passion on this occasion. We do not wish to offend others with our decision, so please respect the dress code!
For Victorian lovers - we are aiming at the later decades of the era ( from 70s onwards) - mostly because of the fashions but also because for blokes there is not much in the way of swimwear before - they were allowed to go commando (banned in the UK in the 1860...)
Bring your own food - and share - or not. Victorian picnic stuff would be great but a discreet modern bits are ok too, we are there to relax, not to provide a living history demonstration. just keep the plastic out of the sight. No heavy drinking or drug use, please - never a problem in the past, but sometimes you just have to state those things ( since I am in my official capacity there).
For convenience sake as well as less crowd and more ease of photographs, we are booked in the hotels closer to the Hove part of the beach -tiny bit less noisy than at the pier, good for photos and less pricey.... exact location will be advertised neared the event, but we usually meet up around the BA tower and walk onwards , past the band stand, to find a suitable spot. In the afternoon, we will be making good use of the Band stand for photos too!
Obviously a lot depends on the weather - but no matter the weather some Victorian fun will take place (even if we need to shelter at a café..)
Swimming = at your own discretion, Prior attire will not be responsible for any pebble injuries, sunburnts ( ha! ), salt water stains on your silk or any other incidents/accidents.
please mark as going ONLY if you are actually planning to attend - this will help me gauge the numbers. If for some reason you change your mind, please adjust your attendance so that we don't want time waiting for people to turn up!
