When people say “American folk music,” they are often referring to the folk revival of the 1960s, a continuation, and sometimes appropriation, of the old time tradition into the cultural mainstream. But what is old time?
In this program, listeners will be given an overview of old time music!
Traverse, along with their guitar, banjo, mountain dulcimer, and autoharp, will perform a variety of songs, serving as lenses through which to view old time’s wide range of cultural and systemic influences, how those affect its perception today, and the music’s continual evolution and growth.

Folksinger, educator, songwriter, and Earthwork Music Collective member Ben Traverse commands a wide array of instruments in their mission to bring the finest traditional folk music into the 21st century. Drawing from the rich history of American folk, Celtic, maritime, and Appalachian traditions, they travel Michigan and beyond telling stories and truths as old as the hills.
“Ben is the modern day Pete Seeger. He’s a musical archeologist who writes songs that sound like they’re from a hundred years ago.” -The Accidentals
“As a musician, Traverse is rooted in the past, forward thinking, and fully present. His foundation is solid and he cares deeply about music and people” -Seth Bernard
