Land Navigation & Map Reading training day in the Brecon Beacons with instruction provided by former R Sqn Special Boat Service operator.
Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th July options. Complementary accommodation provided and post march BBQ and drinks in Pilgrim Lodge Garden.
This beginner navigation training day will cater for all fitness levels, but navigation will ultimately determine the coverage of ground speed. This exercise is beginner/basic focused but geared towards preparing candidates for the rigors of test marches. Intuitive and aggressive navigation techniques will be taught.
The opening window of training will include theory work and an outdoor practical.
Further Details & Event Dynamic: The training cycle format typically opens with Friday/Saturday evening indoor theory work and an outdoor practical.
The main exercise will start with the basic's before going onto more advanced techniques on a tour of the southeastern range of the Brecon Beacons. The area possesses both small, medium and major hills, large features and also vast open areas so both long range and micro navigation will be taught. These techniques alongside a proven formula will equip all attendees with the knowledge required to successfully complete test marches and/or improve confidence and skills for independent outdoor adventures and expeditions.
The DS will be supported by a member of the AEE MST (Mountain Safety Team (if there are over 6 guests) to assist in providing further instruction and to help coordinate exercises.
These training days are enjoyable, unpressurised experiences, primed for learning and shared in a calm, patient and relaxed delivery style without losing sight of military protocols. Both map sheet and the DS will have stories to share, some inspiring, some humorous. The route will also explore a land steeped in SAS folklore and remarkable soldiering history.
