Lord Victor, Earl of Rhyall
A charming and witty English aristocrat striving to maintain his ancestral estate. Facing financial difficulties, he opens his stately home to tourists. When his wife becomes enamored with an American visitor, Victor devises a clever plan to win her back. Victor deeply loves his wife, but his affection is cloaked in understatement, due to his discomfort with grand gestures. He is distracted by his obligations and takes Hilary far too much for granted.
Lady Hilary, Countess of Rhyall
Victor's devoted wife. Though she loves Victor, Hilary finds herself drawn to the excitement offered by an American millionaire. Charles represents everything missing from her current life—excitement, novelty, and attention. Hilary, surrounded by the stultifying monotony of aristocratic life and the pressures of financial strain, craves something more emotionally vivid--and Charles represents escape.
Charles Delacro
An affluent and confident American oil tycoon. While touring the Rhyall estate, he becomes infatuated with Hilary, leading to a romantic pursuit that challenges the Rhyalls' marriage. He’s used to getting what he wants, and in the spirited Hilary, he sees a challenge and a romantic ideal.
Hattie
Victor's former flame and a close friend to Hilary, Hattie is the play’s effervescent catalyst and emotional wildcard. She thrives on drama, and swoops into the Rhyalls’ quiet country life to stir the pot with wit, energy, and a little mischief. Hattie is driven by a cocktail of curiosity, loneliness, humor, and deep affection for her friends. She masks her vulnerability with style and sarcasm.
Sellars
The Rhyalls' loyal and unflappable butler. With a dry wit and impeccable timing, Sellars often provides comic relief. He delivers some of the funniest lines in the play, almost always with a deadpan delivery that makes him even funnier. He’s the invisible hand keeping the play’s elegant chaos moving forward: his involvement in Victor's plan, including orchestrating a duel, is pivotal to the story's resolution.
