Join us for a 3 day Plein Air Painting Workshop where you’ll learn to create art directly from life, surrounded by natural light, fresh air, and ever-changing landscapes. This immersive experience is perfect for artists of all levels who want to deepen their understanding of light, color, and composition while painting outdoors.
Painting in nature challenges you to observe more closely, respond quickly, and simplify complex scenes into expressive, impactful artworks. You'll learn how to set up your outdoor workspace efficiently, choose intense compositions, and handle the elements with confidence and creativity.
What You’ll Experience:
Learn to paint outdoors with oils, pastels, or opaque watercolors. Set up your portable workspace for efficiency and comfort. Practice quick thumbnail sketches to plan intense compositions: master color mixing, light and shadow, and atmospheric perspective. Explore brushwork, texture, and layering techniques in natural light. Discover how to adapt to shifting light and changing conditions. Receive daily feedback in supportive group critiques. Gain confidence painting en plein air — from scene to finished work. Dress for the weather, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to hone your skills in an inspiring and creative environment.
David W. Mayer is an award winning member of the California Art Club (CAC), the Plein Air Artists Colorado (PAAC), and the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) He is also a member of the Laguna, California Plein Air Painters (LPAPA) and a past member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP) and the Oil Painters of America (OPA). His work has been featured in Western Art Collector, Art of the West, and Southwest Art magazines. David has won major national awards, including the "Award of Excellence" at the annual national exhibition of the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and an award at the Salon International Show.
