About this Event

Roots Music Project presents:
A Night of Musical Defiance and Reimagination

Join us for a boundary-pushing evening of musical exploration on May 16th. The night unfolds in two transformative acts:

At 7PM, experience "Chamber Music: Determination & Defiance" featuring Erwin Schulhoff's jazz-infused String Sextet—his musical protest against 1920s conventions—alongside Dmitri Shostakovich's compact but powerful String Quartet No. 7, with its sharp transitions reflecting a society closing in on itself. The program concludes with original compositions by the innovative Jones/Butterfield Duo.

Then at 9PM, prepare for "Return to Electric Liederland: Mahler Six, Drugs, & Rock 'n' Roll." Following last year's acclaimed exploration of connections between Gustav Mahler and Jimi Hendrix, Kenneth Woods and ensemble return with a darker, more dangerous musical journey. Experience the metal side of Mahler as this innovative group showcases rock music's revolutionary spirit and its unexpected parallels with Mahler's symphonic world.

7PM - Chamber Music: Determination & Defiance

SCHULHOFF | String Sextet
SHOSTAKOVICH | String Quartet No. 7 in F-sharp minor, Op. 108
JONES/BUTTERFIELD DUO | Original Compositions

Erwin Schulhoff incorporated jazz in his compositions as the ultimate protest music of the 1920s. Dmitri Shostakovich, similarly defiant, used recurrent themes and sharp transitions to capture the tightening of a society closing in on itself.

9PM -Return to Electric Liederland: Mahler Six, Drugs, & Rock ‘n’ Roll

Last year’s exploration of the powerful links between the music of Gustav Mahler and Jimi Hendrix had audience members raving. In our return to the magical realm of Electric Liederland, Ken Woods and company offer an evening of music both dark and dangerous, showcasing rock’s role as a voice of rebellion and the metal side
