The Boulder Junction Public Library and Boulder Junction Area Historical Society are partnering to present OurStory: a Monthly History Series. Programs will share “OurStory” – highlighting a local history topic or area of interest that helps us remember the past, understand how it impacts our present, and preserve these memories for the future.
Join us for “The Story of Muralist and Artist Frances Badger” with Kay Krans from the Manitowish Waters Historical Society on Thursday, June 26 at 7pm at the Boulder Junction Community Center.
In 1908, Alpheus Shreve Badger purchased the Laflin estate on Big Lake. Until the Great Depression erased much of their wealth, the family spent summers on Big Lake. By the age of seven, Frances Badger became interested in art and her parents encouraged her greatly. She enrolled in art classes for children in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After high school, she attended and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
During the Great Depression, Frances became a muralist and muralist designer under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. Many of her pieces of art were influenced by her time spent in Northern Wisconsin. Join us for a journey through Frances Badger’s art and listen to the stories collected about her time on Big Lake.
Kay Krans is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point and Mississippi State University. She spent her career as an adjunct lecturer on the Methods of Teaching Social Studies in the College of Education at Mississippi State University and as a high school history teacher. In retirement, Kay Krans is a board member of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society. She divides her time between research, writing, giving presentations, and leading historical tours about the Manitowish Waters Region. She loves the search for the stories of our past and telling those stories once found.
