Jim Bredt is a retired inventor and machine designer who worked for 30 years in the 3D printing industry. He has been active at Artisans Asylum for 10 years and used the facilities at AA to develop hardware for one of his 3DP startups. In addition to mechanical design and fabrication, he teaches a weekly figure drawing class.
FreeCAD is a free, open-source CAD package that has recently produced a "release" version. Although not a prerequisite, FreeCAD can be downloaded here: https://www.freecad.org/downloads.php
The class is an introduction to CAD design for people with no prior experience. We will cover the operations of creating a design from scratch using AA's valuable computer-aided design installation in the Photo/Design Shop.
After taking this class you will be able to create and export digital designs for 3D printing and laser cutting.
The lesson will focus on creating sketches, extruding the shapes into the third dimension, and incrementally modifying shapes to build more complicated structures. We will cover navigation of the FreeCAD user interface, saving files and exporting data for 3D printers.
There is no materials fee for this class.
