Introduction to Color Theory for Quilters

Learn about the basics of Color Theory, and create a fabric-based collage project that will stretch your concept of how to use color in your quilts!

Chroma, value, temperature, hue, harmony. Understanding colors can be confusing! Often, people feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available to them in a quilt store: patterns, fabrics, colors. What looks good together? What will make my projects sing? Why, exactly, did that one quilt just fall flat? Do you love quilting, but always feel intimidated by all of the options you have in fabric, pattern, and color? Learning about Color Theory can help! In this class, Rachel will begin with a lecture/demo, introducing you to the vocabulary and science behind what makes colors work together. You’ll get some handy visuals for understanding Color Theory, as well as Rachel’s tips and tricks for how to create visual interest in your quilted projects. After a little break for lunch and discussion, we will spend the last half of the class creating a scrap fabric collage, with a focus on alternating color temperatures, and experimenting with our color choices.
