How can history be taught when political landscapes are constantly shifting? How do educators navigate evolving narratives, censorship, and contested memories - especially when confronting recent or painful pasts? This panel discussion marks the culmination of two interconnected projects exploring historical education across borders and addressing Nazi crimes in Europe.
Educators and experts from Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Germany, and Poland will share their experiences teaching complex and controversial historical topics. Each speaker will offer insights from their national context, followed by a collective exchange on fostering critical thinking and embracing plural perspectives in history education.
We will explore:
How teachers and educators respond to shifting memory politics and political pressures
Strategies for helping students engage with the past while maintaining nuance and empathy
The challenges of teaching remembrance work and transition periods across different contexts
Parallels between post-Soviet transition narratives and Nazi remembrance in contemporary Europe
This conversation opens space for cross-border dialogue, reflecting on what it means to teach history responsibly in uncertain times. Join us for an evening of meaningful exchange as we celebrate the achievements of these two significant projects.
