Described by Jazzpodium as “one of the most exciting bands in Cologne’s jazz scene,” SCHMID’s HUHN has spent the past years crafting a distinctive group sound — a rich and multi-layered dialogue between free improvisation and meticulous composition.�
Following their debut LP (2014) and Golden Spheres (2018), the band released their live album Layers (live) in 2022. Recorded over five consecutive nights at the legendary Cologne club Subway, the album captures a powerful sense of release after months of musical isolation – a cathartic outburst marking the beginning of a new creative chapter.

�Stylistically eclectic yet sonically coherent, the band thrives on intuitive interplay and virtuoso individuality. Drawing from their diverse backgrounds, they blend post-bop, cool jazz, 20th-century chromaticism, avant-garde jazz, post-punk, and— for the first time—electronics into a vibrant, sometimes wild, acoustic brew. The result: music that is meticulously crafted, darkly energetic, and relentlessly forward-looking.��The group has been making waves in recent years with numerous performances and competition appearances, including winning both the composition and soloist prizes at the Tremplin Jazz Festival in Avignon (FR) and receiving multiple nominations for the Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis. Both co-leaders, saxophonists Stefan Karl Schmid and Leonhard Huhn, are also recipients of Cologne’s prestigious arts award.
