Silis / Roots
Documentary | 50 min. | 2022
Director – Diana Khudaeva
Before the event, you have the opportunity to participate in a curatorial tour by de_colonialanguage.
A film about ordinary people whose work, skills, and talents have made our republic renowned and generous, recognized throughout the world not only for the riches of its land, but also for the character, craftsmanship, and unique life and traditions of the inhabitants of the Far North — from the banks of the Amga River to the Laptev Sea. The audience is invited into the world of rural workers: milkmaids, reindeer herders, fishermen, teachers, horse breeders, farmers, and folk artisans.
The film’s narrative is presented in the style of Olonkho, the national heroic epic of the Sakha people.
Diana Khudaeva is a documentary filmmaker and co-founder of the documentary film studio Kün oҕoloro (Children of the Sun). She graduated from the St. Petersburg Institute of Film and Television (2009) and completed documentary film courses at the New York Film Academy (2022). Together with Sardaana Barabanova, producer and co-founder of the studio, she creates films focused on everyday life, culture, and history of Indigenous peoples, reflecting the realities and challenges these communities face. Their films stand out for their sincerity and depth, offering intimate portraits of daily life. They not only document culture but also raise important social issues such as identity, tradition, and contemporary challenges.
Khudaeva and Barabanova are recognized as prominent representatives of women’s documentary filmmaking, playing an important role in the development of cinema in the region and inspiring a new generation of filmmakers.
