FEN SPECIAL – masterclass for harmonica with RONI EYTAN, one of the masters of jazz harmonica
The harmonica is full of untapped potential. The instrument hasn’t yet reached the same level of innovation and recognition as instruments like the piano, guitar, or saxophone. That leaves a lot of exciting ground to explore.
Roni Eytan who studied under Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter at the famous Herbie Hancock Institute in New York, has found one area especially challenging: rhythm and phrasing, playing with a strong sense of time and groove, whether it’s swing, funk, Middle Eastern, or any other rhythmically driven music.
In his own development as a harmonica player, Roni has placed a lot of focus on this. He is always looking for ways to make my phrasing feel more grounded, grooving, and closer to what he hears in his head. In this workshop, he’ll share some of the ideas, practice concepts, and exercises that have helped him develop in this area, and that he continues to use today.
