Postcards to the future: Hope in the time of species extinction

Biodiversity continues to decline due to habitat destruction caused by anthropogenic activities and the increasing impacts of the climate crisis. Currently, there are more than 169,000 species on The IUCN Red List, an assessment that identifies species on the brink of extinction. Several methodologies are being employed by ecologists and environmental scientists to determine the state of wildlife in a particular landscape. One method of observing the presence and behavior of species in the wild is through the deployment of camera traps for 45-night cycles. Using captured videos from camera traps in the Mount Mantalingahan Protected Landscape in the Philippines as a boundary object, this workshop focuses on bringing out the ecological and intergenerational connectedness of participants and drawing out their hopes and aspirations about the future of wildlife species survival during this age of species extinction.

Participants will be immersed in videos downloaded from our GardePro E8 camera traps featuring different wildlife species, and use this as inspiration to illustrate individual postcards that convey stories of the future of the wildlife species. The workshop will bring together stakeholders from different backgrounds to co-imagine and create visual stories that aim to enhance ecological and intergenerational empathy, a crucial element towards a future of wildlife survival in an increasingly anthropogenic environment.
