Four characters—Dan, Anna, Larry, and Alice—navigate love, desire, and betrayal. A quartet of strangers in a sexual square dance, their story unfolds over the span of four years. Closer delivers a biting commentary on intimacy, connection, and the often-destructive consequences of human interaction. It is an unflinching examination of love’s darker side.
As relationships spark, fracture, and shift, the characters circle each other in a brutal game of seduction and confession. Each encounter brings them closer—physically, emotionally, dangerously. Honesty becomes a weapon. Desire becomes a trap. No one is made “closer” by the truth.
Closer premiered at the Royal National Theatre’s Cottesloe Theatre in London in 1997 and made its North American debut at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway in 1999.
