The recent protests and democratic uprising in Serbia have been quickly overlooked amid the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the rise of global authoritarianism. Almost a year after the tragic death of 16 people in Novi Sad, journalist Krsto Lazarević and exiled Serbian author Marko Vidojković take a closer look at the situation.
Lawyer by education, Marko Vidojković (Belgrade, 1975) is a best-selling and award-winning Serbian novelist and short story writer, as well as editor, columnist, TV host and activist. He is best known for his novels The Claws, All Red Riding Hoods Are the Same, and Well Thank You which has been translated into German, English, Bulgarian, Slovene, Macedonian, Polish, Hungarian and Czech. According to PEN International data for the past four years, Vidojković is among the hundred most endangered writers on the planet. He is an honorary member of the Slovenian PEN Center. As of February 2023, he is forced to live and work outside Serbia.
Krsto Lazarević, born in 1989, is a journalist specializing in Southeastern Europe and has reported for German-language media as a correspondent from Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Vienna. Together with Danijel Majić, he is one of the two hosts of the podcast ‘Neues vom Ballaballa-Balkan’.
