Jeff Wall entwickelt großformatige fotografische Arbeiten, die konzeptuelle Strenge mit der Bildsprache von Malerei und Kino verbinden. Seine oft inszenierten und präzise komponierten Bilder reichen von digitalen Montagen und leuchtenden Diapositiven bis hin zu Schwarz-Weiß- und Tintenstrahldrucken. Auf Grundlage kunsthistorischer, literarischer und zeitgenössischer Bezüge thematisiert Wall Gewalt, Erinnerung und Alltäglichkeit in Formaten, die er selbst als „cinematography“ und „near documentary“ bezeichnet.
Er gilt als Schlüsselfigur für die Anerkennung der Farbfotografie als eigenständige Kunstform und wurde mit dem Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2006) sowie dem Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2008) ausgezeichnet. Seine Arbeiten wurden international ausgestellt, unter anderem im MoMA New York, in der Tate Modern London, im Deutschen Guggenheim Berlin und im Art Institute of Chicago.

Jeff Wall creates large-scale photographic works that blend conceptual rigor with the visual languages of painting and cinema. Often staged and meticulously composed, his images range from digital montages and illuminated transparencies to black-and-white and inkjet colour prints. Drawing on art history, literature and contemporary culture, Wall explores themes such as violence, memory and the everyday through what he calls “cinematography” and “near documentary.”
He represented a turning point in the acceptance of colour photography as a fine art form and was awarded the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2006) and the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2008). His work has been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA New York, Tate Modern London, the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin and the Art Institute of Chicago.
