About the event

History and memory in the context of “illiberal memory”: Belarus and the transnational perspective
We invite you to participate in the panel “History and memory in the context of ‘illiberal memory’: Belarus and the transnational perspective” at the 12th International Congress of Belarusian Researchers.

History and memory in the context of “illiberal memory”: Belarus and the transnational perspective

A transformation of memory politics and other forms of historical representation is taking place, which is focused on the reversal of the process of liberalization of memory and work with historical narratives from the late 1980s to the 2000s. Instead of a multi-perspective view of history and a critical approach to the analysis of collective identity, new forms of censorship are emerging. Authoritarian memory politics and the construction of national identity and the rejection of the idea of political accountability for the past became a new reality. This is a transnational process linked to authoritarian regimes and right-wing turns. The panel will discuss these processes from the perspective of the concept of “illiberal memory” (Peto, Rosenfeld, etc.) and its application in local and transnational contexts.
