"Duo in Exile"

Duo in Exile
Two international masters, American trombonist Christopher Robin Cox and Japanese bassist Akira Ando, will come together to paint upon a blank canvas in real time. Bass and trombone combine to create sonic textures hard to find anywhere else.
These two veteran improvisors first met in the late 1990s when performing together in the Cecil Taylor Orchestra at the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Fast forward thirty years and they played together for the second time in April with the Sürgős Quartet, featuring legendary Philadelphia saxophonist Elliott Levin. Cox and Ando found immediate sonic energy, often drifting off into their own drones and extended tonalities during the performances.
“I knew right away that I wanted to play more with Akira, and even suggested to him that we should do a series of duo performances,” said Christopher. Puffing on his pipe, Akira agreed. The result is Duo in Exile. Cox considers himself a refugee of the United States, and has been living in Budapest, Hungary for almost seven years. Akira Ando wound up in Berlin, Germany after being blocked from the United States, following a residency problem. A native of Yokohama, Japan, he brings a certain energy to the music that is hard to describe, yet soulful and tangible.
Between the two of them, they have played with dozens of globally known free improvisers. Both masters of their instruments, but always seeking to expand how they play them. Cox often utilizes artist foil, double reeds, and effects pedals to get sounds from the trombone that are simultaneously unpredictable, but intentional. Similarly, Ando utilizes various flutes and hand-crafted instruments, as well as phenomenal bowing techniques to make the bass sing far out of the range one normally hears. There is no question this music will be living and breathing.
