Improvisational Composition
A playful and focused approach for people interested in improvisation as art practice. The workshop includes movement sourcing, ensemble states, space/time composition and sparks for improvisation. Open to those interested in performing, and those interested in not performing, but rather discovering ourselves as improvisors, connecting with others through movement, and deepening our movement practice. Open to all who navigate the landscape of the body by the movement of the attention.
The material will range from compositional practice to exploring the intangibles: curiosity, vulnerability, commitment, presence. We will work in the spirit of exploration—not jumping to judgement /evaluation— and learn as much by watching each other as by being watched. We embrace getting lost, undercutting the product-oriented hype of “performing” by practicing witnessing as creative act. Come enliven your dance or art practice, explore composition as meditation, find visual beauty through movement, and develop skill in tuning, playing, and opening to new possibilities. We will experiment, investigate, and debate as we share both our favorite tools and some experimental strategies for aesthetic enjoyment of kinesthetic pursuits.
