Join us Friday, August 1, for a special Free First Friday event at the Whatcom Museum’s Lightcatcher building, open extended hours from 12 to 8:30 pm. For one weekend only, the Lightcatcher gallery will be transformed by Silhouettes & Sound, a pop-up exhibition created by artist Heather Dawn Sparks and the Femme Metal Collective. Large-scale metal and paper sculptures of snakes, spiders, and foxes will come to life through cast shadows and colorful light projections in a fully immersive experience.
✨ Friday, August 1 highlights:
🔹 Free admission from 12 to 8:30 pm at the Lightcatcher building (250 Flora St.)
🔹 Interactive shadow art in the pop-up Shadow Sail Theatre
🔹 A creative space to draw, explore, and immerse yourself
🔹 Live DJ sets by Radiant Heat and Lotus Drops from 6 to 8:30 pm
The exhibition remains on view through Sunday, August 3.
🔹 Old City Hall will also be open from 12 to 9 pm with regular Free First Friday hours, so be sure to visit both buildings.
This weekend celebrates the Museum’s collaboration with Heather Dawn Sparks and the Femme Metal Collective as they prepare to install a new illuminated public artwork, Nocturnal Lanterns, on the east wall of the Lightcatcher building later this year. Funded by a City of Bellingham Downtown Activation and Beautification Grant, this piece will be a glowing tribute to art, community, and transformation.
✨ Don’t miss this vibrant celebration of art, music, and imagination.
🔹 Exhibitions and galleries are open until 9 pm on the First Friday of every month, and the Family Interactive Gallery (FIG) is open until 6 pm
🔹 Headphones and other sensory tools are available at the front desks for guests who require accommodation during their visit
