About the event

An Archaeology of the coarse earthenware industry in Ulster during the 17th and 18th centuries
Our April 2025 Lecture will be held on Monday 28 April at 19.30. It is titled 'An Archaeology of the coarse earthenware industry in Ulster during the 17th and 18th centuries' and will be given by Dr Naomi Carver (QUB).

As always this lecture is *free* and open to both the public and UAS members. It will take place in-person at the Elmwood/Geography Building at QUB and online via Zoom (UAS members only) and YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/live/LKICp9Mk5m0?si=O2uYLKT4a0KFdeol).

Hot beverages and biscuits will be served from 19.00 in the Elmwood Common Room before the lecture begins at 19.30 in 0G.029. Feel free to bring your own mug (BYOM!).

Lecture Summary: 'Glazed coarse earthenware, often called blackware or brownware, is a ubiquitous pottery type found on post-medieval excavations. The pottery’s prevalence is at odds with its appearance in archaeological literature. It is often lumped together with a broad seventeenth to nineteenth century date and given little attention beyond basic quantification. Similarly, the type is rarely synthesized into the narrative of wider events. This talk will examine glazed coarse earthenware on a multi-scalar level, including its production and consumption in Ulster, and some of the significance of its presence to society in post-medieval Ulster.'

Lecturer Biography: 'Dr Naomi Carver is a Visiting Scholar at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Naomi was awarded a PhD in Archaeology in December 2024. Her research focused on seventeenth and eighteenth century Ulster pottery and explored how material culture can be used to explore interactions in the past. Prior to undertaking PhD research, Naomi worked in the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (now the Centre for Community Archaeology) at QUB, undertaking archaeological fieldwork and carrying out research. Naomi is the Branch Leader of Belfast Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) and a committee member of the Irish Post-Medieval Archaeology Group (IPMAG).'
