Please join us on Thursday 24 July for the first in a STEM lecture series in collaboration with Lancaster University.
This first talk is for anyone who’s interested in how AI works, how phones fix a glitchy photo, or how their data stays safe online.
This session lifts the lid on the hidden world of digital magic – powered by maths! Through fun and accessible talks, you’ll discover how simple ideas shape powerful technologies, from artificial intelligence to data transmission and encryption. No prior knowledge or maths know-how is needed – just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
Come and explore the incredible ways maths helps our modern world tick behind the scenes, then join us for tea and biscuits.
Dr Jess Jay will talk about cryptography and the modern encryption methods that use pure maths to secure our data. Jess will also explore how maths helps us share information securely without ever having to communicate it directly.
Dr Dan Fretwell will take us through A oCmedy of Errosr, explaining how data can travel across the world without getting lost or damaged and how things like QR codes and CDs still work even when scratched. Expect magic!
Dr Henry Moss gives us the skinny on AI by showing how AI systems learn patterns from large amounts of data and how they can mimic human-like behaviour through basic equations.
