About this Event

The Clifton House welcomes Baltimore painter Jerrell Gibbs and art historian Angela N. Carroll for an intimate dialogue celebrating Gibbs’s first solo museum show at Brandywine Museum of Art. The exhibition, titled Jerrell Gibbs: No Solace in the Shade is expertly curated by Carroll who weaves together a fundamental survey of the artist’s paintings that illuminate the figurative brilliance and familial warmth accenting the elements of his evocative style.

The exhibition is accompanied by a 160-page scholarly catalogue – the first monographic treatment of Gibbs’s work – featuring cultural criticism and discussions about his process, style and technique. As editor, Carroll brought her keen sensibility to the momentous publication.

Be present for what is set to be a remarkable conversation moderated by writer D. Watkins that will alight the richness of community and Black Baltimore.

Door open: 6:00PM

Talk begins: 6:30PM

About the Artist:

Jerrell Gibbs is a Baltimore artist whose dynamic, large-scale figurative paintings explore facets of Black life, including family, friends, and community. His highly personal approach creates a narrative that centers everyday moments in Black life, representations of which have been excluded from art history until recent decades. Gibbs received his MFA at MICA and in 2021, was chosen by the Baltimore Museum of Art to paint Rep. Elijah Cummings’s official portrait, which is now housed in the U.S. Capitol. Gibbs’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Art, CC Foundation, X Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

About the Curator:

Angela N. Carroll is a writer, curator and art historian based in Baltimore who is deeply dedicated to exploring the legacies and cultural expressions of the African Diaspora. Carroll teaches at both American University and MICA. Her work has been featured in key publications such as BmoreArt and FOAM, critical writing in exhibition catalogs by institutions such as the Baltimore Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Art among others.

About the Moderator:

D. Watkins is a New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of The Beast Side, The Cook Up, Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised, We Speak for Ourselves and Black Boy Smile. His most recent awards include a Gordon Parks Fellowship and James Beard Media Award. Watkins is a professor at the University of Baltimore and Salon Editor-at-Large.
