So you decided to do stand-up comedy. I'm sorry to hear that.
Here's the deal - you're either funny or you're not.
Seriously.
The truth is that some people will never succeed no matter how many classes they take or hard they try. On the flip side, some people are very talented and still won't succeed due a multitude of factors, sometimes beyond their control, other times beyond their ability to recognize. And the worse part, you never know which category you fall into until you try - sometimes for many years.
The problem with comedy classes is that standup is a very personal thing - the process of self-discovery IS the art form - and teaching people how to do standup makes about as much sense as teaching someone how to love their own children.
If you're taking a class on how to do it, there's already something wrong.
That said, some high-profile comedians who you may know and love have mentioned having taken a comedy class early in their career - if only to realize it was a total waste of time.
So how is this comedy class different?
Well first of all, it's isn't.
If you want to do standup, the ultimate lesson is to just get on stage. The best advice you can get right now is to a) stop, b) close the browser, and c) write a joke.
Don't forget to tell that joke on a stage. Class dismissed.
But if you're the kind of person who likes to do a little research before they dive in head first, perhaps learn from other people's mistakes, rather than your own, there's certainly nothing wrong with that.
This class is for people like you.
There no right way to do stand-up comedy. You can be high-energy, low energy, clean, offensive, tell stories, or do one-lines, and many other ways that are difficult to describe and have never even been done yet.
But there is definitely a wrong way to do it.
This class will help you:
1) Avoid basic mistakes
2) Give you some perpective on the comedy scene and how to get stagetime
3) Meet people who, if you continue doing this, will become lifelong friends and colleages
4) Help you, help yourself
This class will NOT help you:
1) Write a joke
Seriously, go write a joke.
