About the event

Nature Photography Workshops with Dave Laux, Nigel Adams, and Glenn Aguilar
The Zoological Society of Auckland is excited to change up our regular schedule in October! We’ve been looking for new ways to engage with our community, and build skillsets. We started this with a trip to Auckland Zoo back in June to help you understand how zoos design their spaces to engage and immerse visitors.

Now in October we will be helping you develop your nature photography skills. We all want to take that photo of the amazing animal we see, a photo we can show off to our friends. But how many times have we ended up with something blurry, or too dark, or the animal didn’t turn out quite as cute as we were hoping? Whatever skillset you come with, we hope our planned activities will help you reach the next step in your photography journey, irrespective of equipment.

THREE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY EVENTS:
>PANEL Thurs Oct 9th,
>WORKSHOPS Sat Oct 11th
>COMPETITION Thurs Nov 27th
with
Dave Laux, Nigel Adams, and Glenn Aguilar

Following the PANEL on Thursday October 9th we are hosting a couple of workshops. NOTE THESE WORKSHOPS HAVE LIMITED SPACES, YOU WILL NEED TO SIGN UP YOUR INTEREST USING THE LINK BELOW, YOU WILL RECEIVE CONFIRMATION VIA EMAIL.

WORKSHOPS On Saturday October 11th (backup day Sunday 12th) we are hosting photography workshops at Western Springs. Dave, Nigel and Glenn will run you through setting up for a photo, what to look for, reading behaviour, and how to use your equipment. This is for anyone from phone photographers to point and shoot cameras to DSLRs and mirrorless users. The purpose of this workshop is to equip you with the tools for wildlife photography and continue to upskill. The workshops will be 2-3hrs long - there will be an early a.m. session and for those unable to attend this session an afternoon alternative. Specific times to be advised. There are limited places for the workshop. The cost is $17 for ZSA members, $20 for students, and $30 for non-ZSA members.
Please fill out the expression of interest form here:

Expressions of interest close September 30th.

COMPETITION These events will be followed up with an exciting photography exhibition and competition on Thursday November 27th! This is a chance for you to show off your photos or just enjoy the photos of others. The exhibition is open to everyone, but its main aim is to support our community of amateur wildlife and nature photographers. There are three categories for photos – 1) Wildlife in Human Spaces, 2) Animals in Action, and 3) Nature’s Landscapes Big and Small. You can submit as many photos as you like. You do need to bring a printed copy with you, up to A3. If you can’t get them printed, reach out to Caralyn who can organise getting them printed at the Unitec photo shop for a small fee (otherwise, check out places like The Warehouse Stationary). Cost for each photograph entry is: $4 for ZSA members and any photographer under 15 years of age, $5 for students, and $7 for non-ZSA members.

We do also ask for a gold coin donation for anyone attending the exhibition who is not entering any photos. Even if you’re not submitting something, please come along and support. The ZSA will have nibbles and tea/coffee available, to make this event an opportunity to socialise while appreciating nature. We’re excited to showcase your work and encourage a love of nature photography – so start going through your albums or dust off that camera! This event will again be hosted at Unitec, at the usual time of 6:30pm. This will be a fun way to finish off the year.

We’re excited to offer this series of nature photography events. We hope to see you there!

The Panel and Competition events are being held at Unitec. Panel in building 115 ground floor room 1023; Room for Competition TBA. Rooms will be open from 6:15 p.m.

A koha of $5 is welcomed at meetings to support the Society's work fostering understanding, respect, responsibility and love for the natural world.
