We will learn some songs from the Armenian tradition, which have been saved and passed on throughout the 20th century until today, in the Diaspora and in the Republic of Armenia.
We will approach Armenian traditional repertoire through an introduction to modal singing. Immersing into the world of sounds of the songs' mode (makam), we will study the movements between these sounds through an organic approach.
Through learning the details and subtleties of the modes, by studying the stories and lyrics, and feeling the different rhythms and grooves, as well as simply sharing the joy of singing and dancing together, this workshop will be an introduction to the world of Armenian traditional songs which originate mostly from « Western Armenia », Anatolia, Asia Minor.
This workshop is open to anyone who loves to sing! No minimum level required.

Shushan Kerovpyan
Born in Paris to a family of musicians, Shushan Kerovpyan was immersed from early age into Armenian and Middle-Eastern traditional musics. She learned Armenian modal singing by oral transmission from her parents, Aram and Virginia Kerovpyan, who have been singing and teaching this traditional repertoire (both folk and liturgical) and approach during the last 40 years. She is also a founding member of Collectif Medz Bazar since 2012.
Shushan’s musical world is strongly influenced by folk and soul music from her partly American roots, as well as different folk musics from Latin America, southern Europe and the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern musical worlds, which have colored her Parisian life. She plays and sings in Collectif Medz Bazar (French-Armenian-Turkish band), Afoumaré (Women's stories in Greek gramophone music), Akn Ensemble (Armenian liturgical choir), Kerovpyan ensemble (Armenian traditional and troubadour music), and regularly takes part in other various projects.
