Hi all!
As some of you may already be aware, it is National Whale and Dolphin Week this week. To celebrate, the Newbiggin Dolphin Watch Association is partnering up with the Sea Watch Foundation to do some public land watches, to help contribute to the Sea Watch Foundation’s sightings database.
These will be held today, on Friday the 1st of Aughust and Sunday the 3rd of Aughust at Church Point in Newbiggin By the Sea from 8am. Feel free to drop in at any point, we would love to have as many observers as possible. You will need warm and waterproof clothes, as well as snacks and drinks. If you have any binoculars bring those along too. Kids, dogs and families are all welcome.
The Sea Watch Foundation is a UK based cetacean conservation charity, studying and working to protect the amazing marine mammals we have in our waters. The public land watches they hold are a great way to spread awareness of the threats to our cetaceans, as well as what we can do to help them. They are also a lot of fun, and a great way to spend an afternoon. The SWF also have an app called “Sea Watcher” that they are promoting the use of, it allows you to report your sightings, run surveys and includes handy marine mammal identification guides. The data they are most interested in is what you saw, how many there were, and where they were going. On our land watches we would show you how to fill everything out, it is all very user friendly.
All of the reported data goes directly towards their research. If you would like to find out more about the Seawatch Foundation and what they do, I have linked their website here:
