Rocío is back in Arcata and eager to dance with you again!
Intermediate Samba is the perfect next step for students who are already comfortable with the basic samba step and understanding of samba movement vocabulary. You will improve your skill through strengthening exercises and technique drills, while also learning choreography, developing your unique style, diving into musicality and embracing your sensuality. We will cultivate a non-competitive, supportive dance community for every-body. We encourage artistic exploration and the freedom to be your best self!
On our first class we will talk about each student’s personal growth goals and make sure we support each other to reach them. So, wear your most comfortable and confidence-inspiring workout clothes, running/dance sneakers (or bare feet), and don’t forget your water bottle- let’s dance!

About the instructor:
Rocío Cristal is a Puerto Rican dance artist, teacher, choreographer, percussionist and singer. She has 14 years of Samba dance and drum training and has learned from some of the best and most influential Brazilian artists in the world. She has paraded in the Río de Janeiro Carnaval five times as Muse and Passista, has directed seven parades in Arcata and Seattle, and has taught samba classes and workshops for 12 years in California, Texas, Puerto Rico and online. In 2023 she organized the first cultural and dance tour from Humboldt to Río, where students trained with masters teachers and paraded in the the biggest Carnaval of Río de Janeiro. Rocío has been a member of multiple samba ensembles including Samba da Alegría Arcata, where she was the Dance Director for five years, Samba Floresta, Austin Samba School, Bloco Pacifico, MeliSamba and BateLata.
Rocío believes Samba is not just a hobby, but a way to build community, discover yourself, and heal your body and spirit through ancestral cultural practices that have spanned through generations and continents.
