Op 3 mei opent Sonogi – The Woman in Blue. Een expositie waarin kunst, film en historische verhalen samensmelten tot een nieuwe kijk op de rol van vrouwen en de historische verbinding tussen Japan en Nederland. Twee jaar lang werkten de Japanse kunstenaars Chitose Ohchi en Eiko Ishizawa en de Nederlandse filmmakers Willemiek Kluijfhout en Kylian Weijers samen om het vergeten verhaal van Sonogi —een zogenoemde Yūjo ('courtisane'), van wie de stem (en die van vele andere vrouwen) lange tijd in de marge is verdwenen—te vertellen.

Sonogi en de Yūjo vrouwen
In de 17e en 18e eeuw was Japan grotendeels afgesloten van de buitenwereld. De enige buitenlandse handel was toegestaan op Deshima (Nagasaki), waar de Nederlanders verbleven. Strenge wetten beperkten elke vorm van contact, behalve voor de Yūjo: Japanse vrouwen die heen en weer konden reizen tussen het eiland en het vasteland. In het Westen staan ze vaak verkeerd bekend als “courtisanes” of “prostituees,” maar binnen de Maruyama Yukaku (het beroemde plezierdistrict in Nagasaki) speelden ze een sleutelrol in de overdracht van kennis en cultuur tussen de twee landen. Ook bestond er een bepaalde ‘liefde’ die de wereld deed veranderen – relaties die, misschien onverwacht, bijdroegen aan de bescherming van Japan tegen toekomstige invasies.
Sonogi, ook bekend als Kusumoto Taki, was een van deze vrouwen. Ze leefde samen met de Duitse arts Philipp Franz von Siebold (in dienst van de Nederlanders). Hun liefde was kort maar intens. Toen Siebold uiteindelijk verbannen werd, nam hij een blauwe hortensia mee naar Nederland—vernoemd naar haar oorspronkelijke naam: Otaksa Hydrangea.
Een vrouwelijk perspectief
Al generaties lang zijn vrouwen zoals Sonogi grotendeels uit de officiële geschiedschrijving verdwenen. Traditionele boeken—zowel in Japan als in het Westen—richtten zich vooral op samurai, mannelijke handelaren en diplomaten, of wetenschappers als Siebold. De Japanse vrouwen in hun omgeving werden hooguit als voetnoot vermeld. Sonogi droeg bovendien een dubbel stigma: ze was vrouw én werkzaam als courtisane—destijds geen onderwerp van serieuze historische aandacht. Ook hun interraciale, buitenhuwelijkse relaties golden als ongemakkelijk voor schrijvers uit beide culturen. Zo raakten Sonogi en vele andere oranda-yuki yūjo in Nagasaki in de vergetelheid.
Om hun belangrijke rol in de Japanse en Nederlandse geschiedenis terug te geven en de stigmatisering die op hen rust te doorbreken, staat in Sonogi – The Woman in Blue daarom het perspectief van deze Yūjo centraal.

Op woensdagavond 7 mei, van 19.00 tot 21.00 uur, gaan we verder de diepte in over het werk van de kunstenaars. We voeren dan een open gesprek over de rol en betekenis van de Yūjo vanuit zowel Oosters als Westers perspectief. Meer info volgt.

Openingstijden & toegankelijkheid

Van 4 t/m 10 mei is de expositie dagelijks geopend van 12:00 tot 17:00 uur.

De locatie is rolstoeltoegankelijk en goed bereikbaar met zowel openbaar vervoer als (betaalde) parkeermogelijkheden. Loop gerust binnen; er zal altijd iemand van ons aanwezig zijn om meer te vertellen over het werk.

Over de makers

Chitose Ohchi (acoyapearl.com/c_and) is een Japanse kunstenaar, designer en creative director gevestigd in Tokio. Ze richtte haar eigen studio op, C&, die werkt op het gebied van kunst, design, culturele antropologie en etnologie in een poging om de mogelijkheden van het terugwinnen van de toekomst te verkennen. C& heeft de afgelopen jaren het thema van de relatie tussen mens en natuur onderzocht. Om deze traditionele activiteiten en de band tussen mens en natuur te beschermen, maakt het project gebruik van historische context om contact te leggen met culturen aan de overkant van de zee. Het doel is om nieuwe cycli te creëren door verschillende perspectieven toe te voegen. Haar merk “Acoya” maakt deel uit van de expositie en heeft als doel de schoonheid van de zee en het bos te beschermen en te delen hoe uniek en waardevol elk leven is.

Eiko Ishizawa (eikoishizawa.com) is een hedendaagse beeldend kunstenaar geboren in Nara, Japan. Ze studeerde af aan de Academie en het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam en heeft meer dan 20 jaar in Nederland gewoond en gewerkt. Momenteel verblijft ze op het platteland van Japan om nieuw werk te creëren voor haar solotentoonstelling in de herfst van 2025. Eiko's multidisciplinaire praktijk omvat keramiek, textiel en installatiekunst, waarbij ze vaak het snijvlak van ambacht en concept onderzoekt. Haar werk bevraagt de balans tussen natuur en cultuur, denken en instinct, en Oosterse en Westerse perspectieven op de natuurlijke wereld.

Willemiek Kluijfhout (willemiekkluijfhout.com) is een filmregisseur met meer dan 20 jaar ervaring in het maken van documentaires, korte films en multimediaprojecten. Ze woont en werkt in Amsterdam en staat bekend om haar vermogen om complexe verhalen te verweven tot visueel krachtige en emotioneel aansprekende producties. Willemiek studeerde Filosofie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en volgde een opleiding als Filmregisseur aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie. Haar films zijn wereldwijd vertoond, en haar interesse richt zich op het verkennen van nieuwe vormen van hoogwaardige storytelling en het oproepen van existentiële vragen.

Kylian Weijers (kylianweijers.com) is filmmaker, editor en onderzoeker die documentaire inzet om stemmen en verhalen te versterken die vaak over het hoofd worden gezien of verkeerd begrepen—en zo te reflecteren over identiteit, technologie, de natuur en de manieren waarop we verbonden zijn. Met bijna tien jaar interdisciplinaire ervaring en een Master in Documentary & Fiction aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam richtte hij Posthuman Docs op, een experimenteel platform dat traditionele vormen van storytelling en representatie uitdaagt. Centraal in zijn werk staat het creëren van ruimte, authentieke representatie en community building—waarmee hij zijn generatie wil empoweren om zichzelf en hun plek in de wereld te (her)zien.

Deze expositie vond eerder plaats in Tokio (maart 2025) en is nu voor het eerst in Nederland te zien. On May 3, Sonogi – The Woman in Blue opens its doors. An exhibition where art, film and historical narratives converge to offer a new lens on the role of women and the cultural ties between Japan and the Netherlands. Over the past two years, Japanese artists Chitose Ohchi and Eiko Ishizawa and Dutch filmmakers Willemiek Kluijfhout and Kylian Weijers have worked together to tell the forgotten story of Sonogi — a so-called "Yūjo", whose voice (like that of many other women) has long remained in the margins.

Sonogi and the Yūjo women
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Japan was largely closed off from the rest of the world. Foreign trade was restricted to Deshima (Nagasaki), where the Dutch were confined. Strict laws prohibited nearly all contact—except for the Yūjo: Japanese women who were allowed to move between the mainland and the Dutch island. Though often misrepresented in the West as “courtesans” or “prostitutes,” the Yūjo operated within the refined cultural setting of the Maruyama Yukaku (Nagasaki’s licensed pleasure district), where they played a key role in the transmission of knowledge and culture between the two nations. Also certain 'love' existed there, that made the world change – relationships that, perhaps unexpectedly, contributed to protecting Japan from future invasions.
Sonogi, also known as Kusumoto Taki, was one of these women. She lived with the German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold (working for the Dutch trading post). Their love was brief but intense. When Siebold was eventually expelled from Japan, he took with him a blue hydrangea—named after her original name: Otaksa Hydrangea.
A female perspective
For generations, women like Sonogi have been left out of official records. Traditional histories—both in Japan and in the West—tended to focus on samurai, male merchants, diplomats, or scientists like Siebold. The Japanese women around them were at most a footnote. Sonogi carried a double stigma: she was a woman, and she worked in the sex industry—long dismissed as unworthy of serious historical attention. Their interracial, extramarital relationships were also uncomfortable subjects for chroniclers in both cultures. As a result, Sonogi and many other Oranda-yuki Yūjo in Nagasaki faded into obscurity, remembered only in passing through mixed-race children or fragments in foreign diaries.
Sonogi – The Woman in Blue seeks to return their voices to the center. This exhibition challenges the stigma and invites reflection on the ways these women shaped the shared history between Japan and the Netherlands.

Visiting & accessibility

From May 4 to 10, the exhibition is open daily from 12:00 to 17:00. The venue is wheelchair accessible and easily reachable via public transport or paid parking. Feel free to walk in; there will always be someone from us present to talk more about the work.

About the artists

Chitose Ohchi (acoyapearl.com/c_and) is a Japanese artist, designer, and creative director based in Tokyo. She established her own studio, C&, which now works interdependently in the fields of art, design, cultural anthropology, and ethnology in an attempt to explore possibilities of the future's reclamation. C& has been exploring for the past years the theme of the relationship between humankind and nature. In order to protect these traditional activities and the bond between people and nature, the project uses historical context to connect with cultures across the sea. The aim is to create new cycles by adding different perspectives. Her brand “Acoya” is part of the exhibition and aims to protect the beauty of the sea and the forest—and share how unique and precious each life is.

Eiko Ishizawa (eikoishizawa.com) is a contemporary visual artist born in Nara, Japan. She graduated from the Academy and Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and has lived and worked in the Netherlands for over 20 years. Currently, she is residing in rural Japan to create new works for her solo exhibition in Autumn 2025. Eiko’s multidisciplinary practice spans ceramics, textiles, and installation art, often exploring the intersection of craft and concept. Her work questions the balance between nature and culture, thought and instinct, and Eastern and Western perspectives on the natural world.

Willemiek Kluijfhout (willemiekkluijfhout.com) is an award-winning film director with more than 20 years of experience in creating documentaries, short films, and multimedia projects. Based in Amsterdam, she is known for her ability to weave complex narratives into visually compelling and emotionally resonant stories. Willemiek graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam and trained as a Film Director at the Netherlands Film Academy. Her films have been showcased internationally, and her interest lies in exploring new forms of high-quality storytelling and raising existential questions.

Kylian Weijers (kylianweijers.com) is a filmmaker, editor, and researcher who uses documentary storytelling to amplify voices and stories that are often overlooked or misunderstood—sparking deeper reflections on identity, technology, our environment, and the ways we connect. With nearly a decade of interdisciplinary experience and a Master’s degree in Documentary & Fiction from the University of Amsterdam, he founded Posthuman Docs, an experimental platform dedicated to challenging traditional storytelling, representation, and narrative forms. At the core of his work lies a commitment to open up spaces, represent authentically, and building community—empowering his generation to (re)imagine themselves and their place in the world.

This exhibition was previously shown in Tokyo (March 2025) and is now presented for the first time in the Netherlands.
