The metropolitan capital city of the Netherlands is home to around 8 million people. However, the city’s population fluctuates with the coming of numerous tourists who came to be a part of one of the yearly Amsterdam festivals. Known as “the city for all seasons”, Amsterdam hosts monthly festivals and celebrations like the ones that they hold for Easter, Valentine’s Day, King’s Day and Gay Pride, among many others.
One of the most popular festivals in the city is the annual Amsterdam Light Festival that is often held in the winter months of December until late January. Artistic displays of light artworks and installations made by various artists and architects are showcased all over the city and can be viewed via the boat route or the walking routes. Another well-known annual festival in Amsterdam is the spring festival of Tulips held every April where hundreds of thousands of colorful tulips make the city come to life. The other famous festival in Amsterdam held in April is the King’s Day Festival where the city celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. The 27th April of every year is marked by a day of parties and celebrations while wearing orange outfits, Netherlands’ national color. The Amsterdam Gay Pride celebration, held sometime around July and August, is another big event of cultural parties and exhibitions and culminates in a parade of boats called the Canal Parade.
The city does not only cater to adult festivals as they also have special celebrations for children and the entire family to enjoy. They have the Pop Arts Festival in April where Dutch and international puppeteer masters come to entertain locals and tourists with their puppet shows and various performances. There is also the Food Festival Trek at the city Amstelpark where a combination of food trucks, live music and theatre promises a fun day for the entire family.
There are also a lot of musical festivities in Amsterdam and the biggest of which is the Amsterdam Music Festival. The festival is reputed to be the biggest annual electronic music and dance event and will be held in the Johan Cruijff ArenA this 2019. Another significant music festival is the Amsterdam Fringe Festival where new and undiscovered talented individuals in theater and music are encouraged to showcase themselves in more than 30 venues across Amsterdam. The festival is usually held for 11 days and prides itself in being open and ‘uncurated’ in order to celebrate the true meaning of artistic freedom.
The capital of the Netherlands is certainly not lost when it comes to festivities that center upon food and drink.
