This powerful documentary unearths the suppressed story of Guyanese historian and activist 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 (1942-1980), whose life was marked by surveillance, resistance, and an untimely assassination. Exploring Cold War conspiracies, colonial resistance, and Black Power, the film connects Rodney’s work to today’s social movements, showing how his revolutionary ideas continue to inspire. Featuring personal accounts from Rodney’s family, particularly his wife 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆, and insights from figures like 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘀, 𝗚𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿, and former President of Guyana 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗿, the film is a timely reminder of empire’s lasting impact on the world.

Premiering at the British Film Institute’s largest screen to a sold-out audience, the film uncovers Rodney’s surveillance from age 19 after his visits to Russia and Cuba, as his academic and activist work was deemed threatening by British intelligence. A secret propaganda unit even financed negative reviews of his landmark book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, which remains influential in modern movements like BLM and Pan-Africanism. The film delves into a local legend about a ship carrying synthesizers and keyboards — brands like Moog, Farfisa, Hammond, and Korg — intended for an exposition in Brazil. This ship reportedly got lost near the Cape Verde islands, where the instruments were discovered by locals. Embracing these electronic instruments, Cape Verdeans fused them with traditional Funaná rhythms, creating a unique sound that became a form of resistance against Portuguese colonial rule. The documentary highlights how this electrified Funaná music played a significant role in the nation's struggle for independence, symbolizing cultural resilience and identity.

Saffa Khalil is an interdisciplinary researcher and archivist with a background in History, African Studies, and Memory & Heritage Studies. In 2021, she received the Walter Rodney UG Dissertation Award for her BA thesis Can We Hear the Past? An Analysis of Sudanese History (1820-2019) Through Music, and as the winner of this award, she also appears in the film! Her current research focuses on how intangible heritage, such as musical and oral traditions, contributes to knowledge production, identity formation, and the development of counter-archives.

Saffa Khalil is een interdisciplinair onderzoeker en archivaris met een achtergrond in geschiedenis, African Studies en Memory & Heritage Studies. In 2021 ontving zij de Walter Rodney UG Dissertation Award voor haar BA-scriptie 'Can We Hear the Past? An Analysis of Sudanese History (1820-2019) Through Music', en als winnaar van deze award zit ze ook in de film! Haar huidige onderzoek richt zich op hoe immaterieel erfgoed, zoals muzikale en orale tradities, bijdragen aan kennisproductie, identiteitsvorming en de ontwikkeling van counter-archieven.
𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰
Africadelic is een non-profitorganisatie die zich, sinds 2016, inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Afrikaanse en Afrikaanse diasporische culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme in Nederland. Elk jaar rond de Internationale Afrikadag (25 mei) organiseren we het Africadelic Festival in Paradiso en verschillende andere partnerlocaties in Amsterdam. Dit jaar wordt de 10e editie van het festival gehouden van 21-31 mei 2025, met een speciale focus op de 50-jarige onafhankelijkheid (1975) van vijf Afrikaanse landen (Angola, Mozambique, Kaapverdië, São Tomé & Príncipe en de Comoren), evenals Suriname. Opgericht in 2004 als Europa’s eerste hiphop-filmfestival, heeft Black Soil sindsdien zijn focus verbreed om de diversiteit van de Black culture te vieren. Het festival toont een breed scala aan films uit de Afrikaanse diaspora en vormt het hart van de opkomende Black European art movement. Met een rijke en gevarieerde selectie films – van verhalen die diep geworteld zijn in de Black culture tot werken die deze verkennen en omarmen – biedt het festival voor ieder wat wils. Verspreid over drie locaties in Rotterdam, Den Haag en Amsterdam presenteert Black Soil het allerbeste op het gebied van Black diasporische cinema, muziek en talks. Caribbean Creativity is een in Amsterdam gevestigde culturele organisatie die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Caribische en Caribisch-thema films in Nederland en daarbuiten. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 300 vertoningen georganiseerd in Nederlandse bioscopen en op filmfestivals, waaronder talrijke premières. In 2020 lanceerden ze YardVibes, een streamingplatform met content van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers. YardVibes biedt momenteel meer dan 100 titels aan, waaronder speelfilms, webseries, documentaires en korte films, met maandelijks nieuwe content.
