About Nigel & his dog:
Nigel lost his beloved service dog and best friend, Fred, at the end of October.
It’s taken Nigel and his family a few months to mourn Fred and begin the process of finding a new dog. Fred was from "4 Paws for Ability" out of Ohio where each dog is trained specifically for each child and their needs.
Like Fred, Nigel's new dog will perform tasks such as helping with mobility, retrieval, opening doors while in a wheelchair and behavioral disruption. Nigel has a tracheostomy, ventilator, is homebound and is hospitalized so frequently for various reasons, a best friend to be with during all of the medical visits and daily medical treatments is invaluable. He also requires a non-shedding breed to avoid complications with his ventilator and trach.
For Nigel’s mom and full time caregiver, the biggest daily helps are disrupting injurious behaviors, monitoring breathing treatments, providing a calming companion, and motivation for reward time with his dog. These services are PAWSitively invaluable.
The cost for Nigel's new service dog is RUFFly $18k and will cover the dog, two assistants to care for Nigel while mom is at the center, lodging, and airfare. Both Nigel and his mom will receive specialized training at PAWS.
Nigel has needs that are both chronic and continuing to increase in severity. He’s endured so many surgeries already and always has something coming down the pipe. Let’s help him have another best friend to assist him at home and accompany him to the hospital.
Nigel isn’t able to attend school. He’s not able to see many people during winter because of his poor immune system. Almost every cold equals pneumonia and hospital stays. He has a port which is accessed for blood work and infusions each monthly and he misses having his furry partner to be with him for these things. He endures anywhere from 1.5 hours to 4 hours a day of breathing treatments and is hooked to the ventilator 15 hours a day when well and 24 hours a day when sick. It’s a huge thing to have a PAWtner with you for all of that.
Nigel asks almost daily why Fred had to go. He even asks if his new dog will go so soon too. He understands enough to know it’s not fair. He also understands that he misses his best friend so much and he can’t wait for his next helper.
Team Nigel needs us~let's come together for this special little boy!
