Roopkala — A dance remembrance for the Infinite Roops of Krishna
Curated and conceptualised by Jay Sharma
At the heart of Roopkala lies the belief that Krishna is not just a deity but a feeling — an essence that flows through the lives of those who remember him. From the innocent mischief of Makhan Chor to the heart-wrenching parting with Radha from the profound wisdom shared in Kurukshetra to the playful melodies of Vrindavan — Krishna reveals himself in many roles. As a beloved friend an enchanting lover a mischievous child and a divine guide each relationship brings forth an unique layer of emotion and surrender.
There are stories that live beyond time and there are souls that become the story. Roopkala is a remembarance to one such soul — Shree Krishna — the eternal muse of devotion the embodiment of love playfulness and wisdom. Through the expressive vocabulary of semi-classical and contemporary dance Roopkala invites you to witness a mystical journey into the countless roops of the Divine.
Curated by Jay Sharma and performed by a dedicated ensemble of students this show is more than a performance — it is an offering. Each piece is woven around Krishna’s timeless leelas illustrating how the blue-hued god continues to dwell not only in myth and memory but in the breath of every devotee in the music of every heart that sings His name and in the dance of every spirit lost in Bhakti.
This production delicately explores how Krishna’s presence permeates every relationship. It reflects on his intimate bonds-the symbol of pure unattached love and with countless gopis and bhaktas whose lives are transformed by his divine aura. But beyond the stories of the past Roopkala seeks to highlight something deeper — how Krishna’s leelas continue to inspire awaken and stir the hearts of devotees even today. Each performance is a moment of connection — a surrender — where the dancer becomes the storyteller the devotee and sometimes Krishna himself.
The show is also a celebration of the student-teacher journey. Each dancer under the nurturing vision of Jay Sharma brings forth a piece of their own spiritual journey — shaped by discipline passion and reverence. Together they form a mosaic of moving devotion telling stories that have no end and emotions that have no boundaries.
We welcome you into this space of surrender love and divine rhythm. May Roopkala remind you of the Krishna that lives in all of us — the one who plays the flute of inner longing who dances within us when we let go and who always finds a way back into our hearts.
