In 2035, James Cole (Bruce Willis) is offered parole if he travels back in time to help stop a virus that has forced humanity underground. But when he lands in 1990, six years too early, he’s locked in a psychiatric hospital and dismissed as delusional. There, he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and the erratic Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt). As Cole jumps between timelines, he’s drawn into the mystery of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, and begins to question what’s real.
