Program Details – Beethoven Serenade for String Trio, Op. 8 and Robert Fuchs String Trio, Op. 94 featuring chamber ensemble of violin (performed by YSO music director, Lawrence Golan), viola, and cello
The Beethoven piece begins (and ends) with a march, setting things off in a lively way. The Menuetto and Trio have a nimble eloquence that culminates in delightful pizzicati. The second Adagio opens with a deeply expressive duet for the violin and viola engaging in a rather melancholy, heartfelt conversation above the cello. This is barely established when it is brusquely interrupted by Scherzo, a short section of much faster and wider-ranging material. Almost inevitably it seems, the soulful Adagio returns and after a further scherzando interruption the original philosophical material returns finally to round off the movement.
Fuchs’ piece is known for its fresh, unhackneyed themes, especially in the first movement’s Allegro moderato. The second movement, Andante espressivo, features a beautiful set of variations based on a Scottish folk song. A lively Minuetto with a bright, energetic trio section follows, and the work concludes with a movement that begins with a slow introduction, transitions to an Allegretto piacevole with a fugato opening, and culminates in a thrilling Allegro vivace.
