What started as a simple Ancestry DNA test led WA mining engineer William Delaney on an incredible journey to piece together his family’s past. In the process, he’s mapped the lives of early Yass settlers buried in the Catholic section of the old Yass Cemetery, drawing on research material from our Archive collection.
His research explores the challenges and triumphs of Irish immigrants in colonial Australia and how they shaped the Yass community. His work has also contributed to an international academic study!
Following William’s talk we are delighted to welcome Catherine Ward from Sacred Stone Headstone, Grave Cleaning & Re-Lettering.
Headstones weather over time, and inscriptions fade, sometimes disappearing altogether. Catherine is working to change that. A lifelong history buff, artist, writer and skilled restorer servicing the local area, Catherine will share how she carefully brings old inscriptions back to life, ensuring the names and details of those buried beneath them aren’t lost. Her beautiful restorations can be seen in cemeteries across Yass, Binalong, Crookwell and beyond.
