June is Black Music Month, and WCUW celebrates with "Motown and The Civil Rights Movement."
Every decade has its musical phenomenon. In the 1960s, it was Motown..."The Sound Of Young America(TM)", and the music that inspired a generation. During a turbulent time in American history, Motown and its artists broke down racial, cultural and social barriers more effectively than any other cultural force. It didn't matter if you were black or white, rich or poor, male or female. We all were listening to, dancing to—and buying—Motown music.
Using archival video and music clips, and memorabilia from his personal archive, "Motown Tom" Ingrassia tells the story of the Civil Rights Movement created the environment for Motown to become the most successful black-owned company in America...and how Motown helped further the cause of Civil Rights.
Having worked with Mary Wilson, of The Supremes—as well as other Motown artists—for many years, "Motown Tom" learned this story from the inside out...and he brings this insider perspective to The FrontRoom with this engaging and educational presentation.
You'll be dancing in the street!!
