𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐠 𝐒𝐖 (𝟏𝟎𝟐𝟎𝐦, 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐨 𝐓𝐨𝐩) - 𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤
𝐁𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬 (𝟏𝟑𝟒𝟒𝐦, 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐨) - 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥

Surgeon’s Rib. In an area awash with tourists and bank holiday hillwalkers, it is rare to do a hill that one doesn’t have to share with anyone other than your own party. It comes at a cost but Nevis Hillwalkers have a reputation for doing hills the hard way. Carn Dearg SW has several harder options but the easiest one is described here. It stands there stubbornly, as if to say “climb me if you dare”, even forcing Glen Nevis itself to deviate through 90⁰ to get past it.

Park as near as possible to the YH at NN128718. Cross river Nevis on the FB and walk upstream to the old grave yard at NN136702. Alternatively, the river can be waded fairly easily by the grave yard itself to save 2 or 3km of walking. From the grave yard head upstream along the river Nevis until a wall is reached at NN139699. Head uphill following the wall and then the N bank of the Allt an Aon Doruis. Continue to an altitude of about 400m to the point at which a rock band blocks the way.
Either scramble up this (grade 3) or contour left until a gully branches back right to give a way up above the crags (grade 1). Continue up the hill with Surgeon’s Gullyᵉˣ to the right. Stay to the left of some rock outcrops. Continue until the N ridge of Carn Dearg is reached at a shallow col. A short walk S leads to the summit. From the summit of Carn Dearg a descent can be made S down to Am Mam Buidhe but an easier descent returns to the col* and heads down E into Coire Eoghainn. Cross streams high up then, curving S continue the descent on the E side, and well clear of the Allt Coire Eoghainn to avoid steep, wet and slabby rocks. Make for the CP at the end of the public road in Glen Nevis. Transport required, 10 mins from start.

*An alternative route is a novel approach to Ben Nevis summit:- From the shallow col, climb NE up rough ground to reach the tourist path. From here on, one has to share the hill. Turn E to join the queue for the summit. Turn W to descend the path, turning sharp left at the junction above Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe. Continue down to the next junction, turning down steeply SW to the YH.
