About this Event

Climate Wayfinding with Francisco Gallegos, PhD

Climate Wayfinding is a deep learning program for people seeking clarity, courage, and community on their climate journeys. Through diverse modes of exploration, participants discern and enliven their unique contributions and develop key capacities for climate engagement. As the program’s creator, Dr. Katharine Wilkinson, writes, “We are each a node of possibility for climate healing.”

*Ages 16 and up.

How we find our way:

  • We look inward to welcome and witness the essential emotions, core motivations, and guiding values that we bring with us into climate engagement, reflecting on what insight or counsel they offer; and we discern and honor the skills or “superpowers” we want to contribute to collective transformation.
  • We look outward to scan the wide range of climate solutions and accelerators (or “leverage points”) for change, using our energy and curiosity to filter and gain focus; and we survey our unique contexts and communities, to consider where we want to engage and who our collaborators could be.
  • We look forward with vision and weave together our threads of inquiry and discovery to each create a Climate Compass—a living navigational tool for our climate journeys; and we plan next steps to deepen or enliven our climate engagement, taking action in our personal, professional (or educational), and public lives.

Francisco Gallegos is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. He does research and teaches classes on environmental ethics, the philosophy of emotion, social and political philosophy, and Latin American and Latinx philosophy. He has helped to put out two books, The Disintegration of Community: On the Social and Political Philosophy of Jorge Portilla, published in 2019, and The Latinx Philosophy Reader, published this year. After experiencing the unique power of Climate Wayfinding at a workshop in 2022, he decided to become a certified facilitator in 2024, so he could bring this elegant and clarifying framework to others who are feeling overwhelmed by the immensity and complexity of the challenges and opportunities we are facing today.
