About the event

We’re Still Here: Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary (35mm Screening)
Dir. Guy Maddin
75 min | Narrative / Fiction | 2002
A cinematic version of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula. Filmed in a style reminiscent of silent Expressionist cinema of the early 20th century (complete with intertitles and monochrome photography), it uses dance to tell the story of a sinister but intriguing immigrant who preys upon young English women.

Join us for a post-screening discussion with filmmakers Guy Maddin and Deco Dawson, and producer Vonnie von Helmolt, moderated by Olivia Norquay

Over the last 30 years, Guy Maddin has created countless shorts and feature films, including Rumours (2024), My Winnipeg (2007), The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Archangel (1991), and Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988). He is also an internationally acclaimed installation artist and the author of three published books. He is a member of both the Order of Canada and Order of Manitoba, and was awarded the Telluride Silver Medallion for life achievement in film in 1995.

Deco Dawson is an international award winning filmmaker from Winnipeg, Canada. His 15 innovative films remain at times unclassifiable, continually blurring the lines between dramatic, documentary, animation and experimental film, often creating fantastical worlds with miniatures, archival footage, meticulous set design, in-camera effects and grainy, textured filmstock. His FILM(dzama) and Keep a Modest Head each won the Best Short Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and his 2022 feature film Diaspora is an award-winning, unconventional tour de force.

From 2000-2003 Guy Maddin and Deco Dawson collaborated on a number of films including 2000’s Best Experimental Film of The Year Award from the Critics of Lincoln Centre for The Heart of the World, and the Emmy Award winning film Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary, which Dawson also served as co-director.

From her Manitoba base, Vonnie Von Helmolt produces internationally released theatrical and documentary features, television movies, miniseries and specials. Her Canadian dance productions for the CBC and BRAVO! has garnered numerous film and television awards worldwide, including an International Emmy. Nominations include US Cable Ace Awards and Banff Rockies. Her Emmy-winning dance film, Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary, screened at the Cannes Film Festival, was a TIFF Canadian Top Ten Feature Film, on the Village Voice New York Critics list of the top 10 films released that year, won numerous Canadian and international film festival awards, and continues to screen at festivals around the world.
