In the heart of Winnipeg's Exchange District, if one listens closely, they may hear the distant whoops and rhythmic thumping of a peculiar migratory species: the common pedal pub.
Behold as they travel in noisy herds — flocks of high-spirited office workers and shrieking bachelorettes, clinging to aluminum drink containers and each other, pounding the frame of their communal bicycle as the unmistakable mating call of Die Young by Ke$ha echoes through the concrete canyons.
But tonight… a rare evolutionary offshoot emerges from the shadows.
Clad in elaborate layers of black lace, vinyl, and eyeliner darker than a raven's wing, a new sub-species takes to the street: the Goth Pedal Pub.
Gone are the bright neon tank tops and corporate lanyards. In their place: platform boots, parasols, and a collective aura of beautiful despair. With solemn grace, they pedal — slowly, deliberately — as melancholic anthems by The Cure, Bauhaus, and Joy Division replace the usual pop cacophony.
Passersby stop and stare, unsure if they are witnessing performance art, a funeral procession, or simply a deeply committed social experiment.
And though their faces are pale and expressions unreadable, make no mistake: beneath the somber surface lies a primal joy… because at the end of the journey, there is beer.
