About the event

“The Dawn Comes”: National Indigenous Peoples Day Shorts Program
Presented in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day, this series features works by Indigenous filmmakers Farrah Murdock, Sonya Ballantyne, Darryl Nepinak, Trinity Linklater, Caroline Monnet, Chanelle Lajoie, and Amanda Strong. Using experimental, animation, and digital filmmaking techniques, this collection of films explores self-doubt, personal transformation, and how knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. This program is rated PG. (52 min)

Hangover, Dir. Farrah Murdock, 2023, Canada, 3 min
Created in a time of self-doubt and feeling anxious of the future. Hangover is compiled of independent footage and audio recorded from July to December of 2022.

Eagle Girl, Dir. Sonya Ballantyne, 2019, Canada, 12 min
In a world where people possess magical abilities, a young girl with the power to heal calls on the Creator to grant her the strength to save her sick grandmother. Instead she attracts a shapeshifter.

Bannock, Dir. Darryl Nepinak, 2007, Canada, 7 min
Darryl Nepinak documents his mother as she teaches him and shares stories of how she learned how to make Bannock. A step by step way of teaching others about what Bannock is and how to make it.

Bees & Space, Dir. Trinity Linklater, 2019, Canada, 2 min
Personal reflections on those we love and the impact they have on our lives.

Tashina, Dir. Caroline Monnet, 2010, Canada, 5 min
A young Aboriginal girl’s hopes and dreams are re-negotiated within the walls and tunnels of the institution of education.

Grand Mother Tongue, Dir. Chanelle Lajoie, 2021, Canada, 4 min, Cree and English with English subtitles
Grand Mother Tongue pairs poetry, spoken in Plains Cree, and breath with the intimate imagery of strawberries being consumed bite-by-bite, and finger lick for finger lick. Together, these stories work to build a foundation of queer desire, heart medicine, and language revitalization for those who are also seeking to connect with these intersections of self and community.

Biidaaban (the dawn comes), Dir. Amanda Strong, 2018, Canada, 19 min
Accompanied by a 10,000-year-old shapeshifter and friend known as Sabe, Biidaaban sets out on a mission to reclaim the ceremonial harvesting of sap from maple trees in an unwelcoming suburban neighbourhood of Ontario. This mesmerizing stop-motion animation weaves together multiple worlds through time and space, calling for a rebellion.
