About the event

Floriography: The Secret Language of Victorians

Join us at Dalnavert museum to explore the forgotten history of floriography, the immensely popular Victorian era “language of flowers”. Learn how people in the Victorian era used symbolic flower arrangements to communicate things their more conservative society wouldn't allow them to say out loud, from courtship among young people to Queer Victorians who had to hide their identity, but could utilize symbolic flowers to find like-minded people.

Lecture participants are also invited to explore Dalnavert’s garden to see how floriography features in the curated areas of the garden representing each member of the family who lived at Dalnavert.

Tickets are $10 general. Museum members get free lecture admission!
