This is always a fun course - like kids playing with inflatable rafts in a pool. You will be climbing from the water into your boat several times, and be wet for a good portion of the class. A few times, you will be underwater briefly. You will learn to rescue not only yourself but also others. This will be an American Canoe Association (ACA) course. Although the ACA says there are no prerequisites, I would recommend that you can already perform forward, backward, sweep (turn), and draw (sideways) strokes, or be someone who learns things on the spot. You will need a PFD, whistle, kayak with at least one airtight compartment, paddle, clothing suitable for extended swims, and appropriate footwear. Details on this page
http://ciestroud.com/CieKayaks.html You will want to bring a paddle float, because you should always have one with you when paddling, but I have 2 that can be borrowed. Optional items are a bilge pump, sling, both short and long tow ropes, skirt, noseplugs, and helmet. You most certainly may come solo, but it’s better if the person you paddle with the most also takes this course, so that when you need to do a rescue, because you both will have learned the same terminology and skills, and the rescue will go more quickly and efficiently. The course is $100.00 plus either ACA Member No. or an additional $10 for a single-day membership. In addition to paying online, send me a message with what make and model of boat you will be paddling.
