About the event

Publishing the Past: A Miserable Revenge
Born in pre-Civil War Winchester and later an educator in Harrisonburg, George A. Newman wrote "A Miserable Revenge" in the 1870s, though it was not published until 2025. Set in 1840s Winchester, it is the earliest known Black-authored novel featuring white protagonists. This program features co-editors Mollie Godfrey and Brooks E. Hefner, Newman descendant Ruth Toliver, and others discussing the author’s life, the publication project, and the historical context in which Newman lived and wrote.

MSV members: $10; all others: $15. Register by January 31; visit www.theMSV.org or call 540-662-1473, ext. 240.
