The Queers are an American punk rock band formed in 1981 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, known for their catchy melodies, irreverent lyrics, and Ramones-inspired sound. Fronted by founding member Joe King (a.k.a. Joe Queer), the band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the decades, but Joe has remained the constant driving force behind their snotty, pop-punk energy.
Blending bubblegum pop hooks with three-chord punk and surf rock influences, The Queers gained notoriety in the early '90s after signing with Lookout! Records—the same label that released albums from Green Day and Screeching Weasel. Albums like Love Songs for the Retarded (1993), Beat Off (1994), and Don't Back Down (1996) became underground punk staples, praised for their bratty humor, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and unapologetic attitude.
While the band's lyrics have often sparked controversy due to their politically incorrect tone, The Queers have cultivated a fiercely loyal fanbase that embraces their rebellious, anti-mainstream ethos. Their sound is heavily rooted in classic punk and garage rock, with clear nods to the Beach Boys, The Ramones, and early rock 'n' roll.
Despite lineup instability and occasional clashes with the punk scene's politics, The Queers continue to tour and release music, standing as one of the enduring acts from the American pop-punk underground.
