John “Nittany” Lyon here. Wow. Can you believe it? We are less than 3 weeks away from this year’s Penn State opening game kick-off!! Mark your calendars. August 30 at 3:30 we start the season vs. the University of Nevada Wolf Pack.
Our first three game watches this year will be at our beloved JohnnyLukes, with the first game being in “The Room”. We will send an email out to everyone sometime after August 20th asking for tentative RSVPs so that JohnnyLukes can staff appropriately for us. So, mark your calendars.
Now I admit, I am always optimistic on my prognostications regarding the outcomes of our individual PSU games. I try to be realistic, but am obviously biased. But it has been decades since I am as optimistic as I am right now regarding this upcoming season as a whole. Last year we won two playoff games and set a record of most wins in a PSU season. We came within one minute of making it to the College Football Playoff (CFP) finals due to a late game interception.
So let’s do a brief analysis. We have arguably the top college QB returning for his fourth season as well as the top 2 running backs in the country. Our offensive line is also rated one of the best in the country. Our big weakness last year was our wide receiver corps, and that has been shored up by grabbing 3 seemingly very talented wide receivers in the transfer portal. And while we lost a few of our top defensive players due to graduation or transfer portal defections, our “next man up” personnel seem more than ready to continue our great defensive history. And that was bolstered by Penn State snatching the top defensive coordinator in the country away from the 2024 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes.
So, what does all this mean for 2025? Just about all of the preseason polls have PSU ranked either first, second or third, along with Texas and Ohio State. Most say that this year’s PSU team is built very much like the last 2 national championship teams (Michigan & Ohio State) in that the team is loaded at every position not only with talent, but with lots of fourth year returning seniors.
While every game is important, two games in particular stand out on the schedule. The Sept. 27 game will be our White Out game vs. Oregon. Let’s blow those Ducks out of the water!! Then the biggie, as always, is Nov. 1, on the road at the Horseshoe in Columbus vs. the evil Ohio State Buckeyes.
