About this Event

Become a Certified Extension Master Gardener Volunteer!

Are you passionate about gardening and eager to share that love with others? Do you enjoy educating the public and volunteering in your community? Join us for a New Hanover County Extension Master Gardener Interest Meeting to learn how you can make a difference through horticultural education.

This interest meeting is your first step to becoming a certified Extension Master Gardener Volunteer—a respected and trained educator in your community. The program offers in-depth, hands-on horticulture training provided by NC State Extension, designed for those who are committed to volunteering regularly.

The training course begins in August, with evening classes held on Monday nights, continuing into the following year. Each weekly session aligns with a chapter from the Extension Gardener Handbook—a comprehensive, research-based resource available online: Extension Gardener Handbook.

Program Details:

  • Course Fee: $250 (includes all required materials, field trips, and state program fee; due upon acceptance into the program and is nonrefundable)
  • Topics include soils, plant ID, diagnostics, pest management, and sustainable gardening practices
  • After training, complete a 50-hour volunteer internship, including 25 hours in the Plant Clinic
  • Certification follows completion of both the course and internship

As a certified Extension Master Gardener, you’ll continue making an impact through a minimum of 25 volunteer hours and 10 hours of continuing education annually.

Don’t miss this opportunity to grow your skills and help others grow their gardens.
