Quoting Matthew Caine in the Willits Weekly:
"Southern exposure and a small strip of land
is all that is needed to create an eclectic garden
full of herbs that can heal, comfort, relax, and
provide zest to one’s food,
as demonstrated by the
efforts of four women and
a group of volunteers at
the Medicine Chest Garden, located at the Little
Lake Grange. Through the ideation and efforts of
Claudia Wenning, Annie Waters, Leslie King and
Donna d’Terra, along with volunteers and several
generous donations from local businesses, the
desire for a luscious and hearty herb garden
became a reality in a place where it would not be
expected to be found. The small strip of land on
the south side of the Little Lake Grange is now a
jungle of raised beds with a vast variety of herbs
organized into their various uses.
“We decided we were going to do something,”
said Claudia Wenning of Quantum Level Health.
“We started in January. We spread the word that
we needed donations, and the donations just
came in. This is how it all started. We received
a whole load of dirt from Cold Creek Compost in
January. Then, we got the lumber donated. We
got some labor donated from volunteers. Plants
came mostly from Donna d’Terra’s Motherland
herb garden. She starts a lot of plants by seed.
Prana brought some plants, too. We had a great
volunteer group. That was the beginning. That
was the most work.”
In order to familiarize people with herbs, their
uses, and how to process them into salves,
tinctures, and teas, the Medicine Chest Garden
people have been and are running several tours
and classes. "
